This work represents an attempt to use brushwork and ink washes to create a land of forested mountains in shadows of clouds on such an evening. The composition employs zigzagging diagonals with areas of clouds to separate the fore- and background. The mountain scenery in the distance undulates as light from the moon pours onto the mountaintops. Chiang Chao-shen uses shades of light and dark ink to conceal and reveal, the washes bringing out the area of moonlight that envelops the mountaintops. Other parts of the mountains are done in light washes of ink that fade into the clouds, only to quickly appear again. Are the mountains in clouds, or are there clouds in mountains? Both seem to come and go in the peace and quiet of the moonlight.(20100409)
