There he planted trees and rocks in the garden and arranged decorative rocks, enjoying the rustic delights of countryside living. In 1992 he depicted this favorite mountain retreat in painting, completing the work “Garden Flora,” which includes cycad trees. In 1995 he also specially did a “painting from life” of cycads, completely this work in monochrome ink. Using variations in the density of ink tones to suggest the relationship between motifs, the trunks here appear slightly slanted, the ones on the left and right appearing as front and back to give the composition balance. We learn from Chiang’s inscription on the painting that he personified the cycads, characterizing them as tough and soft to leave the implied meaning up to the viewer.(20100409)
