For centuries, painters have admired the orderly progression of the seasons via their brush and ink. Whether profound or not, they all have a sense of familiarity. This painting of a summer scene transmits the message of a summer day through the lushness of the forested scenery. A broad clearing appears in the foreground of the composition by the water’s edge, where a recluse leads a simple life in the shaded cottage with a stone table and stools out in front. Peaks rise into the middleground as the sound of waterfalls emerges from the distance at the right for a pervading sense of cool. The overall arrangement grasps the image of a flourishing summer scene without a trace of its stifling heat.(20100409)
