It forms one of a set of four hanging scrolls of Mainland scenery, the others being “Huangshan,” “West Lake,” and “The Angling Terrace at Yanling.” The inscription attached at the top here transcribes related poetry by Xu Chengyao (1874-1946). Chiang also wrote an inscription tracing the origin of the name for Thousand Island Lake at the top, describing how the peaks appear as if rising above the water’s surface, so that when viewed from a distance, they look like a thousand islands. The entire work was rendered in dark ink tones, the veins of the landscape being slight adapted from traditional “hemp-fiber” texturing methods. The short, overlapping strokes convey a sense of sparse human inhabitation. The undulating peaks in the distance are done in ochre and blue, the layering recreating an extraordinary view of land and water.(20100409)
