He excelled at painting, calligraphy, and seal carving and was also gifted at poetry and prose, once being a student of P’u Hsin-yu. West Lake got its name from poetry of praise by the literary great Su Shi. In 1994, Chiang Chao-shen had a chance to travel to sites of old, taking up the brush after returning to Taiwan to paint them. From the lushness of hill and lake scenery in the foreground to the misty skyline of distant mountains, and except for some areas of void, a sense of moisture envelopes this scenery of thoroughly sparkling beauty. This painting was donated to the Museum by Chiang Chao-shen’s wife, Chang Kuei-na. (20120714)@#@@#@網頁展示說明@#@浙江省杭州西湖，自北宋蘇東坡作詩詠嘆：「欲把西湖比西子，濃妝淡抺總相宜」，由是得名「西子湖」。江先生於民國八十二年舊地重遊，深覺湖山蒼鬱的景象與記憶中不盡相同。歸來提筆作畫時，昔日煙雨江南的情景不時湧現。於是從湖畔近景到遠山，筆墨水分飽和輕籠薄罩，溕溕中彷彿西湖實景，也彷彿夢江山。畫史上「西湖十景」是大家共同的記憶，此幅夢中西湖，又為西湖續添一景。(20100409)@#@@#@網頁展示說明@#@ West Lake (Xihu), located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, was praised by the great poet Su Shi (Dongpo) of the Northern Song as follows: “West Lake can be compared to the beauty Xizi, always charming either with light or heavy make-up.” It thus became known as Xizi, or Xi (West), Lake for short. In 1994 Chiang Chao-shen revisited this familiar place to him, coming to the conclusion that the modern scenery of West Lake was not like the one of his memories. After returning from his trip, he took up the brush to paint but found the misty rains of Jiangnan in the old days come surging forth. That is why the moistness of ink used here is saturated and encompassing everything from the foreground banks of the lake to the distant mountains, making the viewer feel as if it is both a real West Lake scene and a dream landscape. The “Ten Views of West Lake” represent the collective memory of many Chinese, with this dream vision by Chiang Chao-shen adding to them.(20100409)@#@@#@網頁展示說明@#@浙江省杭州に位置する西湖は、北宋の蘇東坡が詠んだ詩文「欲把西湖比西子、淡妝濃抺総相宜。（西湖を西施に喩えれば、薄化と濃い化、どちらもふさわしい。）」から「西子湖」と名付けられた。江兆申氏は民国83年（1994）に再び西湖を訪れ、湖と鬱蒼とした樹木に覆われた山々の眺めに、記憶と異なる点があることを強く感じた。帰宅後に絵筆をとってそれを描いている際、かつて目にした霧雨に濡れる江南の情景が度々思い起こされた。そこで、湖畔の近景から遠山まで、筆にたっぷりと水を含ませて淡くぼかし、朦朧とした中に浮かぶ西湖のようでもあり、夢の中に現れる江山でもあるかのような風景を描いた。絵画史に名高い「西湖十景」は誰でも知っているが、この夢の中の西湖もまた西湖に新たな一景を添えてくれるだろう。(20100409)
