In 1926 he went to Japan to study, enrolling at the Kawabata Painting Institute in Tokyo. The following year he entered the first Taiten (Taiwan Fine Arts Exhibition), being selected to participate in it. He was also honored along with Kuo Hsueh-hu and Chen Chin as the “Three Youths of the Taiten,” after which he achieved fame in painting circles.
During his study of painting in Japan, he came under the influence of ideas in “sketching from life,” after which he took the view of painting from life as the focus of his creativity and inspiration. In this bird-and-flower painting done in colors, the hues are rich and beautiful, revealing the glimpse of a strong Japanese style. However, closer examination of the work shows a fusion of Japanese-style fine-line painting with the brush manner of Chinese art, to which Lin also added Western-style colors. His careful observation of nature and free transformation of it into a personal as well as rich and lively manner makes this a representative masterpiece by Lin Yu-shan.
