Once presented with a seal from the emperor for “First in Painting,” he was the most important Zhe School artist after Dai Jin. This work, donated by Messrs. Lin Tsung-yi and Lin Ch’eng-tao, depicts a lofty scholar sitting alone on an outcropping before a stretch of water. The mountain on the right extends to the left to create an overhang as twisting pines bend up from the cloud and stand out, filling the work with a sense of tension and instability. The arrangement and unrestrained brushwork relate to Wu Wei, but the style is actually closer to Zhang Lu (ca. 1490-ca. 1563) and Jiang Song, perhaps by an artist after Wu Wei but contemporary to Zhang.
