Steeped in this environment, Yu since childhood demonstrated a strong interest in painting. After moving to Taiwan in 1949, he picked up the brush with earnest and began to formally paint. He also was taught with earnest by National Taiwan Normal University professor Jin Qin-bo, later forming a group with Sun Chia-chin and Hu Nien-tsu known as the “Lin-shui Art Studio.” Yu did paintings for more than thirty years, specializing in fine-line bird-and-flower, fruit-and-vegetable, and plant-and-insect subjects all rendered with much richness and beauty.
This painting in colors depicts a variety of geranium in beautiful hues and fine brushwork, appearing both complex and succinct as well as ornate yet pure. Subtle and skillful in many ways, this work is in a style of Yu’s own.
Mr. Cheng Ming-k’ang donated this painting to the National Palace Museum in 1995.(20110204)
