During the Sino-Japanese War, he traveled west to the grottoes of Tunhuang and did copies of the wall paintings there. In his sixties, he also developed a painting method of splashed ink and colors, achieving fame in the world of modem art. This work, donated by Mr. Chang Ch’ un to the National Palace Museum, was done in 1942 when Chang Dai-chien was traveling west. This image of an auspicious celestial female was copied from a T’ang dynasty (618-907) wall painting at the Yu-lin Grottoes in An-hsi. With colors mostly done using mineral pigments, the figure is full and the lines are curving and flowing. The robust quality already departs from Chang Dai-chien’s elegant and effeminate early style of lady painting.
