Chang Tse (1882-1940)
Republican Period
Chang Tse, a native of Nei-chiang, Szechuan Province, taught at the Shanghai Academy of Art and lived along with his younger brother, the famous Chang Ta-ch’ien, in Shanghai. Leaders in art circles at the time, Chang Tse excelled at painting landscapes, flowers, animals, and especially tigers.
In this work donated by Mr. Lin Tsung-i, Sheep with ewes together feed on luxuriant grass by a hill and stream in a peaceful scene. In this warm and elegant scene, the sheep and thatch are done in fine outlines, the hill in broad texture strokes. The contrasts between fine and rough, simple and complex, highlight their qualities. The artist’s inscription refers to the story of Chih-kung turning in his father for stealing sheep as a metaphor for the lack of morals in his day.
