Jen’s use of color was fresh and his forms lively. Selling paintings for a living, he is regarded as the leader of the Shanghai School. Done at the age of 43 in 1883, this work employs forceful yet elegant brushwork. Jen has depicted here two T’ang Buddhist monks known to posterity as Han-shan and Shih-te. Their faces are quite childlike and their laughing expressions reveal their humorous personalities. This work was donated to the Museum by Mr. Lin Tsung-i.
