Later he also adopted the sobriquets T’ui-lou and Yu-t’ing. He passed the provincial examination and eventually became magistrate of the Soochow Prefect. He loved seals and things from antiquity, and was a skilled connoisseur. He collected bronzes, calligraphy, paintings, Han dynasty (206 BC-AD 220) seals and Chin dynasty (265-420) tiles, and Sung (960-1279) and Yuan (1271-1368) dynasty books. Occasionally he painted landscapes and bird and flower works. He applied wash arbitrarily. Several figures scull or pole a boat upstream while the wind and rain rock the boat, forcing the figures to exert great effort. The dense forest of the nearby shore and the vague and dense mass of the distant mountain are all enveloped in the river’s moist and permeating mist. This painting was donated to the Museum by Mr. Lin Tsung-yi.
