His family was poor with no means of support, so he began studying to paint as a youth. At the age of about 18, he took up residence at a Buddhist monastery, painting by daylight and studying at night by the lamp light in the image hall. His art began to be known and he finally ended up selling paintings in Yangchow. He created a fresh and innovative painting style, becoming later known as one of the “Eight Eccentrics of Yangchow.” Huang Shen was innovative in painting. This album leaf of plum blossoms in monochrome ink can certainly not be considered from the view of form likeness. Moreover, in the quick brush movements that cursively rendered the forceful plum branch and blossoms, the brushwork is unrestrained yet has not lost its elegant spirit. Judging from this work, Huang Shen developed the method of monochrome ink “sketching ideas” to a peak of abstraction.
