His early landscapes followed in the family style, but later he turned to the styles of the Four Wangs of the Ch'ing dynasty (1644-1911). His use of brush was heavy, to the point that critics considered his brushwork and compositions excessively regular and lacked variation. Nonetheless, he was good at depicting flowers and occasionally did figure paintings.
This painting was done in his middle years. The ink is dark and the brushwork heavy, multiple layers of which have been applied to produce these images of hills, trees, and buildings. The composition and use of brush and ink in the scroll all follow in the manner of one of the Four Wangs—Wang Yuan-ch'i (1642-1715).
