P’u Chin (1880-1966)
Republican Period
P’u Chin (style name Hsueh-chai and sobriquet Hsueh tao-jen) was a Manchurian related to the Ch’ing imperial family. He was good at painting and calligraphy, and excelled at poetry and prose. In landscape painting, he followed the styles of the Sung and Yuan, successfully achieving elements of their archaic essence and style. In painting horses, he followed the style of Lang Shih-ning (Giuseppe Castiglione, 1688-1766), working in a fine and detailed manner that captured the subjects with utmost naturalism. P’u Chin served as Professor at and Head of the Department of Art at Fu-jen University.
This painting is dated to 1930 and represents a cold and quiet valley that conceals a temple deep in its reches. Water and sky in the same shades of gray in a landscape that threatens snow. An old man drags a cane as he walks to the building in the foreground.
This painting was donated to the Museum by Mr. Chi Hsing-fu.
