Early in his career, he traveled with Li Yao-p'ing (1880-1938) searching out and copying masterpieces of painting. He even studied Western painting at the Ch'u-t'ing Art Academy. And with his disposition for traveling throughout China visiting famous scenic sites, he was thus able to compbine time-honored tradition with new trends to form his own style, which was systematic yet lively and refined. To honor his achievements in the arts, he was awarded the title of "Painting Master"by the R.O.C. government in 1967. This work was done in 1944, when Huang was 46-years-old. The brushwork is delicate and gentle, in marked contrast to the heroic style of his later years. This painting was donated to the Museum by Mr. Chi Hsing-fu.
