Huang Shen (1687-after 1768)
Ch’ing Dynasty
Huang Shen was a native of Ning-hua, Fukien. In his youth he was poor, and he rejected the civil service exams in order to follow the painter Shang-kuan Chou. Huang Shen later settled in Yang-chou selling paintings, and he became one of the city’s greatest artists.
In this painting, the three immortals Ho Hsien-ku, Li T’ieh-kuai and Chang kuo-lao are shown surrounding a brazier refining the elixir of life. Smoke curls upward, softening the forms and adding a touch of other-worldliness to the scene. The painting is quite large, and Huang Shen worked with power and daring, filling every brushstroke with movement. The variations in the brushwork are multi-faceted, and one can perceive the influence of the ancient seal and “mad” cursive styles of calligraphy in some of the lines.
