There is not too much known about Chu Yeh-yun’s life besides he was active around the end of the eighteenth century.
The end of the handscroll painting bears an inscription by Chang Wen-t’ao. It states that in the first month of 1793 he acquired six unusual rocks from the water at Chih-chiang, each of spectacular form, like mountain peaks. One night in the sixth month they disappeared. Thereupon he requested Chu Yeh-yun to paint this scroll to retain the vestige of those rocks and hoped that they might one day respond to his prayer and fly back to him through their miraculour efficacy.
