He received his jin-shi degree in 1706. Ma specialized in painting ink bamboo, and rising above the contemporary fashion, his withered bamboo stalks and fresh bamboo shoots, won high appreciation. A wooden bridge spans across a stream along whose banks bamboos grow in a continuous line. In the far distance, white clouds cap the mountains. River is as clear and quiet as a mirror. The picture well captures the mood of a retreat where the bamboo thickets would retain a passing-by man of letter to linger.
