P’u-ju (1896-1963)
Republican Period
Mount T’ien-mu (“Heavenly Eyes”) is in western Lin-an County, modern Chekiang. The two main eastern and western peaks are precipitous and at the top are ponds on the left and right like a pair of eyes, hence its name. This work was done by P’u-ju after a trip there in 1946. Known as P’u Hsin-yu, he was a Manchu and a member of the imperial Ch’ing clan who lived for a while in reclusion at Western Mountain, devoting himself to stydying, poetry, calligraphy, and painting. Of them, he considered his writing bettter than his painting and calligraphy. Calligraphed by him here is his “Poetry on Travels to Mount T’ien-mu”, of which 12 lines have been omitted yet still yield a masterful fusion of poetry, painting, and calligraphy-the “Three Perfections”.
