In 1736, he passed the Erudite Literatus exam, serving as Junior Compiler in the Hanlin Academy. Later, due to directness of speech, he fell out of favor with the Qien-long Emperor, was relieved of office, and returned home. His ancestors had left a library named “Hall of the Orthodoxy of Antiquity”. Upon returning home, he focused on studies, never ceasing with lectures and writing. His erudition thus reached new heights. This work of plum blossoms, donated by Mr. Chu Ming-yüan, follows the Yüan style and reveals the literatus ideal of poetry, calligraphy, and painting lodging one’s inner world.
