He later also adopted the “boneless” wash technique of such artists as Yun Shou-p’ing, Sung Kuang-pao, and Meng Kuan-i to form his own style that became known as the Chu (or Ko-shan) School.
This work, donated by Mr. Chu Ming-yuan, deals with a traditional lunar new year subject to render a garden rock with narcissi and peonies in full bloom standing in a tall vase. They suggest the auspicious phrase “peace and prosperity”. The flowers and leaves were first washed with heavy colors and then quickly outlined, revealing the lively spirit of flowers sought at that time of year.
