@#@@#@內容簡介(英文)@#@ Shih-t’ao was known along with Chu Ta, K’un-ts’an, and Hung-jen as one of the “Four Monks” of the early Ch’ing. He was an influential 17th-century artist “leftover” from the Ming dynasty. This work was donated by Mr. Chang Chun. The small landscape depicts a mix of trees by the shore in the foreground and background. Mountains stand out in the distance. This work was done with exceptionally moist brushwork as the wet ink suggests a scene enveloped by mist. The beautiful contrast in ink tones realistically expresses the wet Kiangnan landscape of east-central China. In the upper right is a 5-character truncated verse by the artist, making for a marvelous combination of the Three Perfections (poetry, calligraphy, and painting). @#@@#@內容簡介(英文)@#@ Hazy frost and mist envelop this scene of river and shore. The painting was donated by Mr. Chang Yueh-chun. The monk Shih-t’ao was originally named Chu Jo-chi. His sobriquets were Old Man of the Hsiang River and Bitter-melon Monk. He excelled at paintings of landscapes, flowers and fruits, and orchids and bamboo. His unmannered painting style is characterized by unrestrained brushwork and moist, fluid ink.
