Take, for example, the familiar “Yiyan” announcement list. Receiving the admiration of many in calligraphy circles, it represents a masterpiece from prior to the age of 50. In this work done when he was 70, the title with two characters for “zhai 摘” and “lu 露” come from the line of a Tang dynasty poet. The force of the brushwork is close to the manner of Ouyang Xun’s characters, the shape having a slight slant to the left. The entire work in regular script also has elements of semi-cursive brushwork. The application and lifting of the brush for the “zhai” character on the right, for example, is adapted from the rhythm of Ouyang’s characters. The last stroke in the character for “lu” next to it has an unintentional “flying-white” effect in some of the strokes for a pleasantly awkward feel.(20100409)
