After arriving in Taiwan, he did not give up his studies and continued to plumb the depths of poetry under the master P’u Hsin-yu. In addition to the daily composition and recitation of verse, Chiang would also sometimes take up the brush and transcribe the poetry and literature of the ancients, not only immersing himself in their contents, but also honing his skills in calligraphy as well. This work of calligraphy transcribes the poem “In the Station of the Preparatory Brush” by the Tang poet Li Shangyin (Yishan). The brushwork, suggestive and introverted, reveals a grasp of Ouyang Xun’s regular script, but with a slant, making the brush come and go naturally. Chiang Chao-shen, quite familiar with Ouyang’s “Jiucheng Palace” work, accumulated decades of practice studying and copying it. This hanging scroll of poetry, revealing the results of his effort, stands as silent testimony.(20100409)
