He received instruction from P’u in many aspects of the art and conduct of a gentleman. After P’u Hsin-yu passed away, Chiang Chao-shen fondly remembered his teacher, taking up the brush to transcribe P’u’s poetry in his own calligraphy, never forgetting to mention its origins. The three characters for “Cold Jade Hall” written on this couplet refer to the name of P’u Hsin-yu’s studio. The contents of the couplet, reading “The gibbon calls to the creeping moon, the crane beckons beneath the cloudy pines,” can also be found in the publication Literary Collection of Mr. P’u Hsin-yu. The brushwork here throughout has the vigor of a slanted brush, which when retracted often concealed the tip and thus revealed a strong and solid force. Among the characters, the one for “gibbon” (yuan 猿) appears like a tortuous old tree trunk, making a strong impression. (20100409)
