After retreating to Taiwan, and in spare time from public office and teaching duties, he concentrated on calligraphy and seal carving, being much admired by academia. This piece transcribes a section from Grades of Calligraphy by Yu Jianwu of the Liang, the brush dancing with the spirit of Zhao Mengfu’s semi-cursive script. In the text, the Wei emperor and Wu ruler refer to Cao Cao and Sun Hao; Boru and Ziyi to Wei Ji and Zuo Bo; and Jushan and Yuankai to Wei Heng and Du Yu. All are "middle of the middle."
