An important modern calligrapher and seal carver in Taiwan, in both of these fields he excelled at various script types, delving into and emerging from those of the Jin and Tang dynasties while being versed in Wei dynasty steles. He also studied the manners of Yuan and Ming dynasty masters, even the writing found on excavated silk works and bamboo slips. All of these were in his scope of study and imitation. Converging calligraphy and seal carving, he formed a style of his own.
The content of this work is a section of characters critiquing calligraphy found in Huang Tingjian’s “Inscription on the Crimson Modelbook Calligraphy.” Written in running script, the lines blend both stele and modelbook manners with seal carving. The brushwork is powerful, and the character force appears to fly. The work as a whole is infused with energetic line spacing and was done in 1956, when Wang was in his middle years.
