Composed in the third lunar month, the impeachment was presented to the emperor in the sixth month. Yang died, however, in prison on the 24th day of the seventh month in the following year.
Written in running script, Yang’s draft is composed of 3,280 characters. When writing it, he had already grown despondent over important matters of state. As a result, he wrote in a straightforward manner without striving for technical perfection, using a simple and natural style. Calligraphy is a reflection of the writer. If a person is lofty, so will the calligraphy. The beauty here is comparable to that of Yan Zhenqing’s “Draft of a Requiem for My Nephew,” also in the National Palace Museum collection. This work by Yang can likewise be used to document history, revealing the beauty of both his choice of words and calligraphy.
Mr. Ch’in Hsiao-yi donated this work to the National Palace Museum in 1999.(20110204)
