A student of the famous scholar-official Kang Youwei, Liang received his Provincial Graduate (juren) civil service degree in 1889 and went on to become a renowned politician and literary figure in modern China. Under Kang’s influence, Liang’s calligraphy followed in the style of Northern steles, especially the Zhang Heinu tomb inscription of the Northern Wei and the Longcang stele inscription of the Sui dynasty, yielding a simple yet mature manner. Liang also occasionally did paintings.
This couplet in semi-regular script, in terms of both character form and brushwork, reveals a profound and solid study of Northern steles. The brushstrokes are both angular and rounded, steady and introverted, revealing how deeply Liang achieved the spirit of Northern stele calligraphy.
From the former collection of Mr. Cheng Chiung-shang, this couplet was donated to the National Palace Museum by Ms. Cheng Mei-ch’eng in 1997.(20110204)
