(20120106)@#@@#@內容簡介(英文)@#@ Zeng Guofan, a native of Xiangxiang in Hunan, was a famous general of the Xiang Army. During the Xianfeng reign, he helped eradicate rebel forces in the provinces of Jiangxi, Hubei, and Jiangsu. For his meritorious service to the dynasty, he was praised for valor and bravery of the first rank. He served as Governor-general and Metropolitan Governor of Jiangnan and Jiangxi, being posthumously named Wenzheng. His calligraphy was upright and straightforward, pure yet not insipid, exactly reflecting his unyielding spirit and courage.
This work features elegant and steady calligraphy, with each of the four panels selecting a line from the works of the Tang poets Du Fu and Han Yu as well as the Song poets Huang Tingjian and Su Dongpo. The calligraphy that appears after each line offers a critique of these four poets, revealing Zeng’s knowledge of poetry and his own views for later generations.
Ms. Shen-Sa Pen-ying donated this work to the National Palace Museum in 1987.
