He excelled at the Classics, was gifted at etymology, and studied Bronze and Stone scripts. In calligraphy, he took Yan Zhenqing as his foundation and traced to the seal and clerical scripts of the Zhou, Qin, and Han dynasties up to Six Dynasties steles, which he all pursued by copying. He Shaoji’s seal script, in a style of its own, has a feeling of running script and a forcefulness of clerical script. This album (donated by Messrs. Tann Boyu and Tann Jifu) is like the calligrapher’s lesson book; similar character forms are written in the same place. Some are even repeated, revealing how the calligrapher emphasized character structure and brushwork variation.(20100406)
