@#@@#@內容簡介(英文)@#@Liu Yung, a native of Shantung province, was a chin-shih civil service candidate of 1751. He went on to serve as a Grand Academician of the T'i-jen Hall. Cultivated in scholarship and enjoying a distinguished career as an official, he was also unusually gifted as a calligrapher.
Liu Yung, in his study of calligraphy, went through an initial stage of copying the styles of Tung Ch'i-ch'ang (1555-1636) and Chao Meng-fu (1254-1322). He then went on to follow the works of old masters from the Chin, T'ang, and Sung dynasties. He was particularly impressed by the manners of Yen Chen-ch’ing (709-785) and Su Shih (1036-1101), which he fused together to form a style of his own.
In this work, the width of the strokes varies considerably within the evenly spaced characters. This mature piece from Liu's later years is natural yet still within ancient traditions, and it thus reflects the personal style that he developed.
