Gifted at poetry and excelling at calligraphy, he first studied Wei and Jin styles for a style archaic and solid. After his middle years he formed his own unique and detached style. In the 2nd year of Wansui Tongtian (697), Empress Wu ordered Wang Fangqing to submit his Wang Xizhi calligraphy. He then presented a collection of calligraphy by his ancestor Wang Dao and 27 others in 10 scrolls. She ordered it to be copied in filled outlines, with “Wansui Tongtian Modelbook” as one. This work, although only a copy of part of it, reveals Liu Yong’s round and rich turns, the brushwork being light and heavy with spirited variations already in his own manner.(20110710)
