本幅所繪寫意薔薇,如見籬邊一枝伸出,用色冶艷,色彩明亮可人。由畫幅款識推論,此扇當於戊寅年(1938)為兆春先生所畫,為晚歲之作。

Liu Pin (1887-after 1942)
Republican Period
Liu Pin (style name Yu-sheng) was a native of Ning-po, Chekiang, who resided in Shanghai. A self-learned talent in the arts, he once joined the Mi-feng Painting Society. He excelled at depicting flowers, birds and other animals, grasses and insects, and figures, often applying Western painting techniques.
This painting shows a rose branch done in the “sketching ideas” manner as it apparently extends over a hedge. The colors fuse beautifully and the hues are bright and appealing. As indicated by the inscription, this fan was done in 1938 for a “Mr. Chao-ch’un”, indicating that it is a late painting by Liu Pin.
This work was donated to the National Palace Museum by Mr. Lin Ch’eng-tao.
