This work is from 1960, when the artist was 61. Mt. Hua is in Shaanxi and a famous peak of China, renowned as its “foremost scenic mountain.” The artist used strong and sharp axe-cut texture strokes to render the steep cliff walls. Using large brush and ink dots, the accumulated masses represent the clouds. Standing out against the sea of clouds at the base of the mountain, Mt. Hua emerges abruptly and clearly before the viewer’s eyes.(20100408)
