His father, Fu Hsi, was noted in his time for calligraphy, painting, and seal carving. In his youth, Fu Chu studied in the family tradition, and he excelled in calligraphy and painting, especially in the depiction of flowers, which were patterned after the famous Ming (1368-1644) monochrome ink flower painters Chen Shun and Hsu Wei. Depicted in this hanging scroll are the so-called Three Friends of Winter—pine, bamboo, and plum blossoms. The pine tree is stout and strong in contrast with the steely thin bamboo. The branch of plum blossoms juts into the composition at an angle from the upper left to join the composition. With its pink blossoms in full bloom, one can almost smell the scent wafting through the scene. Fu’s inscription indicates that this scroll was done in 1928 at the age of 42.
