From the early to late Qing, calligraphers of renown appeared both at court and among the populace, among them the late Qing master Wu Dacheng. Wu (style name Qingqing, sobriquet Kezhai), a native of Suzhou in Jiangsu, was a Presented Scholar of 1868 who rose to become Governor of Hunan. In his spare time, he gathered examples of ancient large seal script not found in the Shuowen dictionary, explaining each character’s origins. He completed the book Additions of Ancient Seal Script to Shuowen that became an invaluable aid to studying ancient characters. Combining small seal and bronze scripts in this couplet, special effort was placed where they mix. (20120409)
