He set up the School for the Classics in Hangzhou and the Sea of Studies Hall in Guangzhou while head of Zhejiang and Guangdong-Guangxi, respectively, nurturing many talents in the Classics. His own achievement in the Classics is also seen in his Collation of Notes and Commentaries on the Thirteen Classics. As for dabbling in calligraphy, he tended to archaism and favored stele characters. This work of seal script is transcribed from Ouyang Xiu’s “Moshan River.” With its lofty manner, no wonder critics praised him as a “true scholar among those in officialdom.”(20120409)
