He learned painting from Chu Lien (1828-1909) and went to Japan to continue his artistic training. Along with Kao Chien-fu and Kao Ch’ifeng, he is one of the founders of the Ling-nan School, noted for the combination of Western realism, Chinese techniques, and the old masters’ styles to create a pure and elegant manner. The calligraphy in this hanging scroll is a seven-character truncated verse which is notable for its intentionally awkward style of brushwork. The characters have notbeen intentionally run together, and they have been rendered using a centered brush slightly slanted, giving the work a personal style. Ch’en’s inscription to the left indicates that the scroll was done in 1947.
