Colored threads against a light background make up this silk tapestry copy of a painting of an immortal with a peach of longevity attributed to the famous Ming artist Shen Chou (1427-1509). Even the calligraphy and seal of Shen were woven at the top of the work. In the lower left is the signature and seal (also woven) of the artisan Wu Ch’i. Here, Wu was able to achieve much of the spirit of the original painting. The face of the immortal is very spirited. The reproduction of the inscription is also faithful and powerful, retaining much of the original manner of the calligraphy. The weaving in Wu’s tapestry here is detailed and finely rendered.
