After he presented an album of lohans painted in outline manner to the Ch’ien-lung Emperor (r. 1736-1795) when the latter was on an inspection tour of the south, Chin was awarded a position as a court painter. The emperor thought highly of his paintings. Chin’s brushwork was neither overly skillful nor delicate, but rather was quite spirited and fluid. The angular lines of his works are similar to those employed by academic artists of the Ming dynasty, which distinguished him from contemporaries. In this painting, a scholar is seen lying on a broad couch which has been set on an open balcony, and he appears to have the air of someone waiting. In the long corridor below, a servant carries a book in his clasped hands. In the foreground area, stones, bamboo, pines, and plantain grow within a courtyard. The colors are fresh and bright, and the autumnal atmosphere is amply suggested by the clouds and mist.
