In the Ch’ieh-lung era (1736-1795), the general Ning-ku-t’a offered a white reindeer from Tung-hai as tribute to the court. The emperor ordered a portrait be made, and he had his poetry of praise inscribed on it. Although this work bears no seal or signature of the artist, it belongs to the style of Lang Shih-ning (Giuseppe Castiglione, 1688-1766), a native of Milan, Italy and a novitiate of the Jesuit order. At 27, he arrived in China and soon painted for the court, excelling at figures, birds-and-flowers, and especially dogs and horses. This work was completed in 1745,when Lang would have been 57. @#@@#@內容簡介(英文)@#@According to an imperial inscription of 1745, this is a painting of a reindeer from the northeastern regions that had been sent as tribute by General Ningguta. With a body as large as an ox, it is docile by nature and closely related to the moose. Judging from the size of this painting, there was an attempt to make a life-size portrayal of the animal, which is very similar to other life-size representations of steeds and hounds by Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766). The eyes of the reindeer here are done with detail in terms of the reflection of light. Likewise, the reindeer hair is also rendered with great precision. In particular, the expression of the reindeer seems to perfectly convey its mild and tame nature.
