The dates of his birth and death are not recorded, but he was active during the reign of Ch'ien-lung (1736-1795), when he served in the Imperial Painting Academy. He specialized in painting flowers and birds, apparently deriving his style totally from that of Yun Shou-p'ing. Even the style of the calligraphy in his signature is based on Yun. However, when his used color and way of handling the brush are compared with those of the contemporary academicians Tsou I-kuei and Chiang T'ing-hsi, Hsu Yu's paintings seem decidedly lacking in naturalness.
