His style name was Yuan-shu and his sobriquet was Tao-shan. In 1649,he received his chin-shih civil service degree. He was a good painter of flowers, birds, and insects, deriving his style from Ch'en Ch'un and Hsu Wei. However, in his use of ink tone, he was a master of literati art. His landscapes are uncluttered and elegant. This painting depicts a few sprigs of willow with a cock and nien fish below. The means of expression are fresh and apt; the composition is not stilted by over-attention to a fixed method. The motifs of the painting are connected with the time of the year. The nien fish is a homophone of the word for 'year' and the cock is a homophone of the word for good luck. Thus, the painting expresses, symbolically, the hope for a lucky new year.
