As a landscape painter he followed Wang Yuanqi’s style. Also a painter-in-attendance at court, the Kangxi Emperor called him “First in Painting.” The right leaves of this album were done by Tang under imperial command in 1746 at the age of 73. The 24 landscapes imitating ancient styles are either in ink and colors or in ink only. Starting with the blue-and-green Tang dynasty styles of Li Sixun and Li Zhaodao, they end with Cao Zhibo of the Yuan dynasty. The left leaves were calligraphed by Ji Huang (1711-1794) in regular script, providing the names, heritage, stylistic features, and critiques of these 24 landscape masters of old.(20100104)
