Shākyamuni responded with a gata, or verse, in which he described Kuan-yin’s vow to help all sentient beings: “the light of Kuan-yin’s wisdom clears darkness like the sun; the rain of the Dharma nourishes all like ambrosia; and the sound of Kuan-yin’s teaching is as vast as the sound of the waves.” Such is the origin of Kuan-yin Among Waves and Caverns. Buddhist sects during the Ming and Ch’ing dynasties converged in many aspects, and Kuan-yin appeared in more than just the Lotus Sūtra. In this painting, Kuan-yin holds a willow branch in her right hand and a vase in her left. This depiction of Kuan-yin holding a willow branch is also called Dantakāstaha or the Healing Kuan-yin. In Esoteric Buddhism, Dantakāstaha relieves illnesses and thus holds a willow branch. The vase is a symbol of purity and cleanliness, especially of the spirit. @#@@#@內容簡介(英文)@#@This, the 8th leaf from the album “In Celebration of the Amitābha Buddha,” shows Kuan-yin at Tidal Sound (Hai-ch’ao-yin) Cave. The cave is located at Mt. Potala (P’u-t’o), Chekiang, and is said to be where Kuan-yin is often sighted. Among the waves, the South Sea Kuan-yin wears a white robe as she stands on auspicious clouds emanating from Tidal Sound Cave. Looking back, she holds a willow branch to spread the water from the vase and alleviate the suffering of people. The figure with hands clasped is Sudhana (Shan-ts’ai), who is often said to appear at the Sudhana Cave at Mt. P’u-t’o. The white parrot here is said to have accompanied the South Sea Kuan-yin to Mt. Potala and studied Buddhism (as narrated in “The parrot of Loyalty”).@#@@#@內容簡介(英文)@#@This painting depicts the Kuan-yin Bodhisattva treading lightly among the clouds while waves crash thunderously by a precipitous rocky cliff. Kuan-yin is adorned with jewels; a small Buddha can he seen above her head. Her left hand grasps a water vase while the right waves a willow branch that dispenses sweet dew and the rain of the Dharma. In front, Shan-ts’ai t’ung-tzu bends at the waist with hands together in obeisance seeking the Bodhisattva’s teachings. This painting is the eighth leaf of an album of auspicious Buddhist subjects entitiled Wu-liang shou-fo hui-ch’ing t’u.
