Distant mountains appear here and there as a stream flows through a moisture-filled forest. Nothing is missing in this work depicting a landscape in transformation soon after a driving rain. The mountaintops are constructed with horizontal strokes and ink dots, to which a moist brush was used to add washes. The tree branches and trunks were done with terse strokes of dark ink, with large dots applied for the leaves. The entire work is in the “sketching ideas” method of monochrome ink, the tones of which are mature and moist with graded variations much in the spirit of the Mi Family style of cloudy mountains. The signature here reads, “When rains descended from the heavens, clouds emerged from the mountains and rivers. Painted in the Mi method. Yunpeng.” Though undated, judging from the painting style, it is probably a middle to late work by Ding Yunpeng. (20120715)
