This fan painting was done when the artist was 44 years old, in the prime of life. It represents a shallow stream with sandy banks in heavy mist. A single ancient plum stands beside the river. Balancing it is a large rock accompanied by scattered flowers, mountain tea and narcissus. Each plant bears blossoms bursting into life. Two pairs of magpies drift in the sky. No color is used in the painting, but each object is outlined in monochrome ink. Coarse and fine areas are distinguished with brushstrokes, while distance and juxtaposed elements are differentiated by ink tones. Thus the visual realism of the painting is very strong, and it gives the impression of having been painted in full color.
