He learned landscape painting from Ch’en Hsien (1450-1496), but also based his style on the works of such Southern Sung (1127-1279) masters as Li T’ang, Liu Sung-nien, Ma Yuan, and Hsia Kuei. Chou’s experienced brushwork was sharp, strong, refined, and vigorous, and he transmitted his style to the Ming masters T’ang Yin and Ch’iu Ying. In this painting, a tall pavilion with multiple eaves leans upon a mountainside bounded by a surging river, upon which a boat with its sail raised is about to depart. Depicted in a spirited manner on the boat are firgures working together to hoist the sail and to pole and steer the boat. The trees on the shore are bending to the side with their leaves blowing in the strong wind. The entire composition is detailed and lively. Though a small painting, it has a great deal of force.
